San Francisco inverts the usual summer logic. The famous fog — locals call the bank that pours over Twin Peaks “Karl” — settles in from June through August, when the Golden Gate Bridge disappears for days at a time and the afternoon wind off the Pacific makes Ocean Beach feel like November. Those are also the months the city is fullest, because visitors travel on a school calendar rather than a weather chart.
The genuinely good weather comes late. September and October bring the warmest days of the year, the clearest views from the hills and from Alcatraz, and enough of a lull after Labor Day to make the waterfront tolerable again. Locals treat this as the real summer, and it is the single best window to visit.
Winter is wet but far from dead. The rain comes in bursts between long clear spells, hotel rates drop hard, and the hills turn green rather than gold. Bring a proper shell and you get the city at its cheapest and calmest, with the added advantage that the big-ticket attractions stop selling out.
