When to visit Paris
Paris is calmest in February and busiest in July. For the best balance of decent weather and smaller crowds, aim for January.
Paris has a wide, predictable crowd curve with one hard peak. July and August are the fullest months, driven almost entirely by overseas visitors, and they arrive at exactly the moment Parisians themselves leave: the monuments run at capacity while neighbourhood bakeries, bistros and small shops close for two or three weeks. It is the worst trade in the calendar — maximum queue for minimum city.
The shoulders are where the value sits. September is the standout: the weather usually holds into early October, the tour groups thin out after the first week, and the city is back at work, which is when Paris is most itself. Late April through June is the other good window, though Easter, the marathon and three May public holidays all pull numbers up, and museums close on the holiday Mondays.
Deep winter is the genuine off-peak. January and February are grey, damp and cheap, and the great collections — the Louvre, the Orsay, the Rodin — are as close to empty as they ever get. If your priority is standing in front of the art rather than sitting on a terrace, that is the trade to make. December is the exception inside winter: Christmas lights and the department-store windows push weekend crowds back up, though the museums stay far calmer than in summer.

Local timing tips
- Book Louvre timed slots on the official site as soon as your dates are fixed, and use the Porte des Lions entrance — it is consistently faster than the Pyramid.
- The national museums close on Tuesday and the Musée d’Orsay closes on Monday; check before building a day around one of them.
- The Eiffel Tower stair ticket is cheaper, sells out later than the lift, and usually gets you to the second floor faster.
- National museums are free on the first Sunday of the month — excellent for the budget, punishing for the queue.
