Lima
Sun from December to April, grey skies from May to November, almost no rain and rarely a crowd.
When to visit Lima
Lima is calmest in March and busiest in July. For the best balance of decent weather and smaller crowds, aim for May.
Lima is the gateway to Peru, and much of its tourist traffic is passing through on the way to Cusco, Machu Picchu and the Amazon. That keeps the city’s crowd curve gentle. It rises in July and August, when the Andean dry season and the Fiestas Patrias holidays bring the most travellers to Peru, and around Christmas and Holy Week.
The weather has two faces. From December to April the sky is clear and the city is warm, and Limeños spend their weekends on the beaches south of Miraflores. From May to November a low grey cloud known locally as the panza de burro covers the coast; it is cool and damp but almost never rains, and the city receives next to no rainfall all year.
The historic centre, the museums of Barranco and the clifftop parks of Miraflores are never overwhelmed the way European capitals are. The best months for a stay combined with the rest of Peru are April, May and October to November, when prices are reasonable and neither the coast nor the Andes is at its peak.

Local timing tips
- Plan the historic centre for late morning to catch the Changing of the Guard at the Government Palace, held around noon.
- Book the famous restaurants weeks in advance; Lima’s best-known tables fill long before the city’s hotels do.
- Traffic is heavy: allow an hour between Miraflores and the historic centre at rush hour, or use the Metropolitano bus lane.
- From May to November, pack a light jumper; the grey season feels cooler than the temperature suggests.
