Cartagena
January and December are the famous months; February and March have the same sun with far fewer people.
When to visit Cartagena
Cartagena is calmest in October and busiest in December. For the best balance of decent weather and smaller crowds, aim for September.
Cartagena’s walled city is small and its season is short and intense. From mid-December to mid-January Colombian holidays, Christmas and New Year and the cruise season all overlap, and the streets inside the walls, the Getsemaní quarter and the boats to the Rosario Islands are at their busiest and most expensive.
The dry season runs from December to April, with steady trade winds that make the heat bearable. February and March are the sweet spot: the same blue skies as January, but the holiday crowds have gone home. Semana Santa, whenever it falls, is the exception.
From May to November the rains come, usually as heavy afternoon storms rather than grey days. September and October are the quietest and wettest months; hotel rates are at their lowest, and mornings are often fine. Cartagena lies south of the main Caribbean hurricane track, so storms rarely hit directly, though the sea can be rough.

Cruise days change everything
Cartagena is a cruise port. On ship days the centre fills between mid-morning and late afternoon, then empties again.
How long to stay
Three days for the walled city, Getsemaní and the San Felipe fortress, plus one or two for the Rosario Islands or Barú.
Local timing tips
- Visit the San Felipe de Barajas fortress at opening; there is little shade on the ramparts after 10:00.
- Boats to the Rosario Islands leave from the Muelle de la Bodeguita; agree what is included, and the port tax, before you pay.
- Walk the walls at sunset, when the heat breaks and the evening breeze comes off the sea.
- In December and January, book hotels inside the walls or in Getsemaní months ahead; prices rise sharply.
