When to visit Cancun
Cancun is calmest in September and busiest in March. For the best balance of decent weather and smaller crowds, aim for October.
Cancún has a clean dry season from December to April, and that is exactly when everyone comes. Temperatures sit between 28 and 31°C, humidity is low, the Caribbean is calm, and the hotel zone runs at capacity — with March the hardest month of all, when North American spring break stacks on top of the winter crowd and Chichén Itzá fills for the equinox.
From June the picture changes. The rainy season brings short heavy downpours rather than washouts, and the Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November, with September and early October the statistical peak. Those two months are the true low season: rates fall sharply, ruins and cenotes are close to empty, and a fair number of properties close for annual refurbishment. Travel insurance that covers weather disruption is not optional in that window.
One variable no rate chart shows is sargassum. The seaweed drifts onto Caribbean-facing beaches roughly from April to August, varying enormously year to year and beach to beach. Isla Mujeres, Isla Holbox and the north-facing stretches of Cancún itself are usually far less affected than the coast south of Playa del Carmen.

Cancun is a cruise port. On ship days the centre fills between mid-morning and late afternoon, then empties again.
How long to stay

Local timing tips
- Do Chichén Itzá as an early self-driven trip rather than a coach tour — the site opens at eight and the convoys from the coast arrive around eleven.
- Cozumel takes several cruise ships a day in winter, so the island is calm again after four in the afternoon once they sail.
- The ADO bus network linking Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum is cheap, air-conditioned and frequent — better value than a rental car unless you are chasing remote cenotes.
- Check current sargassum reports for the specific beach within a week of travelling; conditions change fast and north-facing shores usually stay clear.
