When to visit the Quinta da Regaleira

The calmest time to visit the Quinta da Regaleira is January, when the crowd typically sits around 40/100. The busiest stretch is July. Hour to hour, the quietest window is usually 10:00 AM.

The Quinta da Regaleira is in Sintra and is visited with a timed ticket. The official page gives opening at 10:00, last entrance at 17:30 and closing at 18:30 from January to March and from October to December, and 09:00, 17:30 and 19:30 from April to September. Entry slots run every 30 minutes, the last at 17:00, and the ticket allows a maximum of one hour after the time printed on it. The Palace, the Chapel and any exhibition spaces close 30 minutes before the garden, and the site is closed on 1 January and on 24, 25 and 31 December.

Sintra falls inside the Greater Lisbon statistics, so the curve follows Lisbon’s: July is the busiest month and January the calmest. The April to September days are the longest, so the busy months are also the ones with the most opening hours. In the site’s model, the first hour after opening is the calmest of the day; the hourly chart is the model, not a count at the place.

How to visit the Quinta da Regaleira with fewer people

  • Tickets are personal and valid for a single entry on the date and time chosen. The official page says the visit can be rescheduled through the official online ticket office up to 48 hours before, and that this office is the only authorised ticket platform.
  • The route has one-way sections: the Palace, the Initiatic Well (descending only) and the underground walkways between the Well and the Eastern Grotto. The official rules ask for care on steps and in tunnels, and say that visitors with restricted mobility and children under 15 must always be accompanied because of the rugged terrain.
  • Suitcases, trolleys and large backpacks are not allowed in, tripods and drones are banned, and flash photography is not allowed inside the Palace and the Chapel.
