When to visit Peru
Across Peru as a whole, February is typically the calmest month and July the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.
Peru has three distinct zones and they disagree. The Andes, including Cusco and Machu Picchu, run on a dry season from May to September and a wet season from November to March. The coast around Lima is the reverse, with grey damp winters and sunny summers. The Amazon is hot and wet all year, with higher water from November to April.
The Andean dry season is what most itineraries are built around, and it is also the busiest and most expensive. June to August brings clear skies, cold nights and full trails.
The shoulder weeks of April and October are the quiet compromise: mostly dry, noticeably emptier, and green rather than dusty.
It is not the same everywhere
Lima can be under grey drizzle in July while Cusco, 3,400 metres up, is sunny and freezing at night and the Amazon is at 32°C — the three regions rarely share a forecast.
Getting around
Domestic flights from Lima to Cusco or Arequipa take about ninety minutes and are the practical choice; the Andes are slow by road, and Machu Picchu is reached only by train from Ollantaytambo or on foot.
