Málaga
Winter here is the warmest city break in mainland Europe; August is the Feria and nothing else.
When to visit Málaga
Málaga is calmest in January and busiest in August. For the best balance of decent weather and smaller crowds, aim for February.
Málaga is the rare European city where winter is a strong season. Daytime highs stay around 17°C from December to February, it rains on only a handful of days a month, and the Picasso Museum, the Alcazaba and the Centre Pompidou are calm. Many northern Europeans come for exactly that.
Spring and summer are busier for different reasons. Semana Santa in Málaga is one of the largest in Spain, with processions of huge thrones through the old town. July and August bring the beach crowd and the cruise ships, and the Feria in mid-August turns the centre into a nine-day street party.
The balance months are May, June, September and October: warm enough for the beach, busy enough to feel alive, but without the peak prices. The Caminito del Rey, an hour inland, has daily caps and sells out in spring and autumn.

Cruise days change everything
Málaga is a cruise port. On ship days the centre fills between mid-morning and late afternoon, then empties again.

Local timing tips
- Book the Caminito del Rey on its official site weeks ahead in spring and autumn; daily numbers are capped.
- The Picasso Museum is free for the last two hours on Sundays, which makes that the most crowded slot of the week.
- Climb to the Gibralfaro castle early in the morning; the path from the Alcazaba has little shade.
- Cruise ships dock right next to the old town; check the port calendar and avoid the Alcazaba on mornings with several ships in.
