Hong Kong

China High confidence Updated 2026-07-01

November is the clear-sky sweet spot — golden week is the one week to dodge.

When to visit Hong Kong

Hong Kong is calmest in June and busiest in November. For the best balance of decent weather and smaller crowds, aim for September.

Hong Kong’s year splits cleanly into a dry, comfortable half and a hot, wet, typhoon-prone one. From October to December the air dries out, temperatures settle in the low twenties, and the harbour views people come for are actually visible. That is peak season, and it deserves to be.

March to May is warm and increasingly humid, with a spring fog that regularly puts Victoria Peak inside a cloud. June through September is the wet season proper — nineteen rain days in June, unrelenting humidity, and typhoons that can shut ferries, shops and offices for hours under a Signal 8 warning.

Two things distort the crowd on top of the weather: mainland holiday weeks, particularly Chinese New Year and the National Day golden week from October 1, and the cruise season at Kai Tak, whose big-ship days noticeably thicken the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade. Both are easy to plan around once you know the dates.

Cruise days change everything

Hong Kong is a cruise port. On ship days the centre fills between mid-morning and late afternoon, then empties again.

How long to stay

Three days for the city and the Peak; four or five to add Lantau, the outlying islands or a hiking day on the Dragon’s Back.

Local timing tips

  • An Octopus card covers the MTR, buses, the Star Ferry and most convenience stores — buy one at the airport before you do anything else.
  • The Star Ferry costs a few dollars and gives you the same harbour crossing that tour boats charge many times more for.
  • Take the Peak Tram early in the day or ride bus 15 instead; on a clear afternoon the tram queue routinely runs past an hour.
  • Around 40 % of Hong Kong is country park. The Dragon’s Back and the Lantau trails are half an hour from Central and almost empty on weekdays.
