When to visit Hanoi
Hanoi is calmest in June and busiest in November. For the best balance of decent weather and smaller crowds, aim for July.
Hanoi is far enough north to have a real winter, which surprises people who expect tropical Vietnam. From November to April the city is cool and often grey, and December and January bring low-twenties days with genuine chill at night in buildings that have no heating. From May to September it is hot, humid and wet, with August the wettest month and the peak of typhoon season on the coast.
The crowd follows the dry, mild autumn. October and November are the busiest and the best — clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and Ha Long Bay and Sapa trips running reliably. June and July are the low point: 33 °C with saturating humidity, and hotel rates that reflect it.
The date to check before anything else is Tết, the lunar new year, which falls in late January or February. The city is at its most atmospheric and its least functional: shops, restaurants and museums close for up to a week, and domestic transport sells out entirely.

Local timing tips
- Crossing the road works by walking slowly and predictably so the scooters can flow around you. Stopping suddenly is the only genuinely dangerous thing you can do.
- Book Ha Long Bay overnights with a flexible cancellation policy between June and September, because sailings are called off at short notice in typhoon season.
- The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum closes on Mondays and Fridays, and for maintenance for roughly two months each autumn — check before you build a morning around it.
- Old Quarter street food is at its best on plastic stools between 6am and 9am; by lunchtime the best stalls have sold out and packed up.
