When to visit Greece
Across Greece as a whole, January is typically the calmest month and August the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.
Greece is really two destinations sharing a flag. The mainland — Athens, Delphi, Meteora, the north — works all year, with a cold, wet, genuinely continental winter in Macedonia and Epirus. The islands run on a season that opens around Orthodox Easter and closes in the last week of October, after which hotels, tavernas and most ferry routes shut down until spring. Turning up in the Cyclades in January is not off-peak travel; it is arriving after the country has gone home.
Inside the season the crowd curve is steep. July and August bring both the northern European holiday and the Greek one, and 15 August is the single heaviest travel date of the year, when ferries sell out weeks ahead and domestic flights double in price. The meltemi, a strong dry north wind, blows hardest across the Cyclades in July and August and regularly cancels sailings, which is a practical problem rather than a romantic detail.
The value sits in May, early June, late September and October. The sea is at its warmest in September, well after the crowds thin; May is greener and cheaper but the water is still cold. Orthodox Easter is the wildcard — it is movable, it usually falls later than the Western date, and it empties the cities as Greeks return to their family villages, which is charming to witness and difficult to book around.
It is not the same everywhere
The north is not the Greece of the brochures: Thessaloniki, Macedonia and the Pindus mountains get snow, frost and a proper winter, while Crete and Rhodes in the far south stay mild enough to swim into November; the Ionian islands on the west side take two or three times the rain of the Cyclades, which are so dry that several have no natural fresh water at all.
Getting around
Greece is a ferry country before it is anything else — Piraeus is the hub and a fast boat reaches Mykonos or Santorini in roughly three to five hours — while the mainland has one useful railway, Athens to Thessaloniki in about four hours, and everything else assumes a car or a domestic flight.

- The island season effectively runs from Orthodox Easter to the last week of October; outside it, ferry frequencies collapse, small islands lose their connections and most seasonal hotels are closed.
- Orthodox Easter is movable and usually falls one to five weeks after the Western date; it is the busiest domestic week of the year, when internal ferries and buses fill with Greeks travelling to their home villages.
- Ferry tickets for August, especially on the Piraeus to Cyclades routes and around 15 August, should be booked several weeks ahead, and summer sailings are occasionally cancelled outright when the meltemi gets up.
- Archaeological sites close early in winter and open at dawn in summer for good reason — most have no shade at all, and the state sites offer free admission on a handful of days a year that draw enormous queues.
