When to visit Germany
Across Germany as a whole, January is typically the calmest month and July the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.
Germany staggers its summer holidays deliberately: each of the sixteen federal states takes its six weeks on a rotating schedule between late June and mid-September. The effect is that the autobahns and the Baltic coast are busy for most of the summer, but never all at the same time, and no single fortnight is a nationwide crunch.
City tourism follows a different rhythm. Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne peak with the weather and with trade fairs; Munich has one enormous distortion in Oktoberfest, which runs late September into early October and reprices the entire region.
Christmas markets are the other big driver. From late November most city centres are busy in the late afternoon and evening while the daytime stays reasonable — a pattern worth planning around rather than avoiding.
It is not the same everywhere
The north is maritime and grey with mild winters, the south and east are properly continental — Munich and Dresden get hard frosts and real snow while Cologne rarely does, and the Alps hold winter two months longer than the Rhine valley.
Getting around
ICE trains link the main cities in two to four hours and the Deutschlandticket makes regional travel very cheap, though it does not cover the fast trains; book ICE seats early for a fraction of the walk-up fare.
