Munich

Germany High confidence Updated 2026-07-01

Avoid the Oktoberfest weeks unless you are coming for them; the rest of autumn is Munich at its easiest.

When to visit Munich

Munich is calmest in February and busiest in September. For the best balance of decent weather and smaller crowds, aim for January.

Munich’s crowd curve has one spike that dwarfs everything else: Oktoberfest, which starts in the second half of September and runs into the first days of October. For those two and a bit weeks hotel prices can triple, the Theresienwiese draws millions of visitors and the whole city runs on festival time. If you are not coming for it, it is the single period to avoid.

Outside the Wiesn, the city follows a gentle central-European rhythm. Summer is busy, with Bavarian school holidays, day trips to Neuschwanstein and the lakes, and beer gardens full every warm evening. December is the other peak, when Christmas markets open on Marienplatz and in almost every quarter.

The calmest months are January to March and November. They are cold and grey, but the Residenz, the Pinakotheken and the Deutsches Museum are at their emptiest, and hotel rates are at their lowest of the year. Late October and May are the sweet spots for most visitors.

How long to stay

Three days for the city itself, plus one day for Neuschwanstein or Salzburg and, in summer, a day at one of the lakes.

Local timing tips

  • If you do go to Oktoberfest, tables inside the tents are reserved months ahead; weekday mornings are the easiest time to find a seat without one.
  • The Pinakotheken charge a reduced symbolic entry on Sundays, which makes Sunday their busiest day.
  • Neuschwanstein tours sell out in summer; book them online before you fix the day trip.
  • A day ticket for the MVV covers the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses and pays off after three journeys.
