When to visit Florence
Florence is calmest in January and busiest in July. For the best balance of decent weather and smaller crowds, aim for February.
Florence has a walled-in historic core of barely one square kilometre carrying several million visitors a year, and almost all of them want the same three things: the Uffizi, the Accademia and the Duomo complex. That geometry, not the weather, is what makes the city feel crowded. From April to October the streets between Piazza della Signoria and the Ponte Vecchio are effectively at capacity through the middle of the day.
Two forces drive the peak. European school trips run from March to early June and again in late September, filling the museums with organised groups on weekday mornings. Overseas leisure travel peaks from June to August, when the Arno valley traps heat and afternoon temperatures pass 32°C. April is the worst combination of the two: Easter, the Scoppio del Carro, blossom in the Boboli, and every timed ticket gone.
The reward for coming in winter is unusually large here. January and February are cold and sometimes wet, but the Uffizi and the Accademia are walkable rather than shuffled through, hotel rates fall by half, and the Duomo climb can be booked the day before. November is the best value of all — low season prices, the last of the Chianti harvest just past, and museum galleries you can actually stand still in.

Local timing tips
- Uffizi and Accademia entry is timed and released on the official state site; the small booking fee is far cheaper than the alternative.
- The cupola climb is a separately booked slot from the cathedral, and the cathedral floor itself is free to enter.
- Piazzale Michelangelo is the standard sunset view, but San Miniato al Monte just above it is quieter and has evening Gregorian chant.
- State museums close on Monday; the Bargello and several civic collections use different closing days, so check each one individually.
