When to visit Austria
Across Austria as a whole, January is typically the calmest month and July the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.
Austria effectively sells two products. From December to March the west is a ski economy, with Tyrol and Salzburgerland at capacity and prices to match. From May to September the focus shifts east and to the lakes, with Vienna, Salzburg and the Salzkammergut carrying the cultural season.
Vienna itself barely follows the Alpine pattern. Its quietest weeks are the deep winter ones outside the ball season and the Christmas markets, and its busiest are the warm months plus December.
The shoulder months — late April to early June, and late September into October — are the sweet spot for anyone not skiing: mild, green and much cheaper than either peak.
It is not the same everywhere
The Alps dominate: Innsbruck and the western valleys hold snow into April and stay cool all summer, while Vienna and the Pannonian east are far warmer and drier, regularly topping 30°C in July when the mountains are still comfortable.
Getting around
ÖBB trains connect Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck in two to four hours and run reliably; a car only becomes worthwhile for the lakes and the smaller Alpine valleys.
