Late autumn and early spring are Salzburg without the coaches; the Festival summer is worth it only with tickets.

When to visit Salzburg

Salzburg is calmest in February and busiest in August. For the best balance of decent weather and smaller crowds, aim for March.

Salzburg is a small city with a big cultural calendar, and that calendar drives its crowds more than the weather does. The Salzburg Festival, from late July to the end of August, fills every hotel and concert hall and makes the old town the busiest it gets all year. Mozart Week in January and the Easter and Whitsun festivals create shorter peaks of their own.

The other steady source of crowds is the day trip. Coaches from Munich and Vienna, and tours following the Sound of Music locations, fill Getreidegasse and Mozart’s Birthplace between late morning and mid-afternoon from spring to autumn. Early mornings and evenings are much calmer even in summer.

December is the second peak, with the Christkindlmarkt on the Domplatz and a stream of visitors to the Silent Night Chapel in nearby Oberndorf on Christmas Eve. The quietest months are February, March and November, and October is the most beautiful calm month, with autumn colours on the city’s hills.

How long to stay

Two days for the old town, the fortress and the Mirabell Gardens, plus a day for the Salzkammergut lakes or Hallstatt.

Local timing tips

  • Take the funicular to the Hohensalzburg Fortress at opening; the queue at the valley station builds quickly from mid-morning.
  • Mozart’s Birthplace is busiest from 11:00 to 15:00; visit at opening or in the last hour.
  • For the Salzburg Festival, book tickets when sales open in winter; accommodation goes as fast as the seats.
  • Hallstatt is very crowded in summer; go early in the morning, or visit another Salzkammergut lake such as Wolfgangsee.
