Sixteen hundred kilometres long — there is no single best month for the whole country.

When to visit Vietnam

Across Vietnam as a whole, June is typically the calmest month and November the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.

Vietnam is too long to have one season. The north around Hanoi has a genuine cool winter and a hot wet summer; the centre around Hue and Hoi An has its own rain season from September to December, out of step with everywhere else; and the south around Ho Chi Minh City is tropical all year with a wet season from May to October.

That means the honest answer to "when should I go" depends entirely on the route. March and April, and again October and November, are the two windows when most of the country is workable at once.

Tết, the lunar new year, is the one date that overrides everything. For up to a week, shops, restaurants and museums close, transport sells out, and prices rise — but the atmosphere is extraordinary if you plan for it rather than around it.

It is not the same everywhere

Hanoi can be 15°C and drizzling in January while Ho Chi Minh City is at 32°C, and the central coast floods in October when both ends of the country are dry — a single itinerary can cross three climates.

Getting around

Domestic flights link Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City in about two hours each; the Reunification Express railway is scenic but slow, taking well over thirty hours end to end.

Country-level tips

  • Check the Tết date for your year — it moves between late January and mid-February and closes much of the country.
  • The central coast has its own rainy season; do not assume a dry north means a dry Hoi An.
  • Ha Long Bay cruises are frequently cancelled for storms in summer; leave a buffer day.
  • Domestic flights are cheap and save days of overland travel on a two-week trip.
