Valletta
Winter is mild, grey and nearly empty; August is hot, full and shared with the cruise ships.
When to visit Valletta
Valletta is calmest in January and busiest in August. For the best balance of decent weather and smaller crowds, aim for February.
Valletta is a walled peninsula of narrow, straight streets, and it is small enough that a crowd is felt street by street. In January you can walk Republic Street and sit in the Upper Barrakka Gardens with few people around; the same walk in August means shared pavements and waits at the main sights. The price of the quiet months is the weather: January has highs of 16 °C, ten rainy days and about ten hours of daylight.
Because Valletta is also a port of call, the crowd depends on the day as much as on the month. The cruise terminal sits in the Grand Harbour next to the Valletta Waterfront, and when several ships are in at once the centre fills through the middle of the day and thins out again once they sail. The cruise port publishes its schedule of calls by date, so even a quiet month has busier and calmer days.
For the best balance of weather and space, aim for April, May and November. May has highs of 25 °C and two rainy days, while November keeps 21 °C with noticeably fewer people than October. October is as busy as September, so it is a month for warm weather rather than empty streets; December and February are the calm winter alternatives if you accept a wet day or two.

Local timing tips
- Check the Valletta Cruise Port schedule before choosing a day for the most visited sights; on days with several ships it is busier from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, while early morning and evening stay calm either way.
- The Saluting Battery fires its guns at noon and at 4 pm, Monday to Saturday; there is no firing on Sundays, Good Friday, Easter, 24, 25 and 31 December or 1 January. The ticket includes a guided tour, and it is worth arriving about 15 minutes early.
- Heritage Malta museums and sites, including the Grand Master’s Palace and the National Museum of Archaeology, close on 1 January, Good Friday and 24, 25 and 31 December; on a few days a year the State Rooms of the Grand Master’s Palace close early, so check the opening-hours page before planning a day around them.
- The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum admits very few people at a time and Heritage Malta urges early booking; only a small number of last-minute tickets are sold the day before, at set sales points.
