When to visit Turkey
Across Turkey as a whole, January is typically the calmest month and September the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.
Turkey spans climates that have little to do with one another. The Aegean and Mediterranean coasts run a classic beach season from June to September; Istanbul is a year-round city that is at its best in the shoulders; and central Anatolia, including Cappadocia, is a high plateau with genuinely cold winters and hot dry summers.
That means the country has no single peak. April to early June and mid-September to October are when the whole of Turkey works at once — warm enough for the coast, comfortable enough for the cities, clear enough for the interior.
The other rhythm to know is religious. Ramadan shifts about eleven days earlier each year, and the Eid holidays that follow it are the biggest domestic travel weeks of the Turkish calendar.
It is not the same everywhere
The Black Sea coast is green and rains all year, the Mediterranean south is hot and dry with mild winters, and the Anatolian plateau swings hardest of all — Cappadocia can be under snow in January and above 30°C in July while Antalya stays swimmable.
Getting around
Domestic flights are cheap and frequent and are the only sensible way to cross the country; high-speed rail links Istanbul, Ankara and Konya, but the coast and Cappadocia effectively need flying or long overnight buses.
