Switzerland
These figures describe Zurich and the lowlands; the Alps follow a calendar of their own.
When to visit Switzerland
Across Switzerland as a whole, January is typically the calmest month and July the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.
The numbers on this page are Zurich’s. Zurich is the only Swiss destination we cover, so the national series is the series of the lowlands north of the Alps: January is the calmest month, July the busiest, June and August are almost level with it, and December rises a little for the Christmas markets. Read it as a guide to the cities and lakes of the plateau, not to the mountain resorts.
The Alps run on two seasons that the Zurich curve cannot show. The winter sports season opens in December and carries through the winter, which makes January, the quietest month in Zurich, a high season in the ski resorts. The summer season begins when many mountain railways reopen in May, hiking and mountaineering peak in June, and the autumn walks among coloured forests in September form a third, shorter window. In spring and in the weeks before the ski season the mountains sit between seasons, so check each operator’s dates before building a trip around a summit.
1 August has been a public holiday throughout the country since a 1993 vote, and Easter, Christmas and New Year are kept everywhere, but the other holidays are set canton by canton. Ascension, Whit Monday, Labour Day and 26 December therefore close shops, schools and offices in Zurich and may not in the next canton, so look up the canton you are in, not the country.

The lowlands around Zurich and the lakes are mild in summer, with July highs of 24°C, and cold and often grey in winter, with January highs of 4°C; in the Alps temperatures fall with altitude and snow decides what is open. A January trip can be a ski day in the mountains and a museum day in the city, a train ride apart, while in July the city is at its fullest and the high valleys are in their own summer season. Use the Zurich figures for the cities and ask each resort for its own season.
Getting around
Switzerland is small and the rail network dense: from Zurich, Lucerne is under an hour by train, with a direct connection every 30 minutes, and Lugano is under two hours through the Gotthard Base Tunnel; when the tunnel is closed for maintenance, trains take the old panorama line and the journey is about an hour longer. Buses and boats complete the network.

Country-level tips
- Check holidays by canton, not by country: only 1 August is a holiday by federal rule, and Easter, Christmas and New Year are kept everywhere, while days such as Ascension, Whit Monday, Labour Day and 26 December vary by canton.
- For the Alps, choose by activity: snow sports from December through the winter, hiking and mountain railways from May, with June as the peak of the hiking season; between seasons, check each railway’s dates before counting on a summit.
- High pass roads such as the Furka, Grimsel and Nufenen are closed for the winter and reopen late in spring; in 2026 they reopened on 29 May, with the Susten still closed, so a driving route over the Alps is a summer plan, not a spring one.
- The Swiss Travel Pass, sold to visitors who live outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein, covers trains, buses and boats, free entry to more than 500 museums and the Rigi, Stanserhorn and Stoos excursions, with up to 50% off many other mountain railways; panoramic trains need a seat reservation or a surcharge.
