When to visit South Korea
Across South Korea as a whole, January is typically the calmest month and October the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.
South Korea has four sharply defined seasons and only two of them are comfortable. Spring, roughly April to May, brings the cherry blossom moving north up the peninsula; autumn, late September to early November, brings the foliage moving south. Both are brief, spectacular and heavily travelled by Koreans themselves.
Between them sits a summer that is genuinely hard work: hot, humid, and with a monsoon called jangma through late June and July. Winter is dry and bright but bitterly cold, with Seoul regularly below −10°C.
The domestic holidays matter more than the international ones. Seollal and Chuseok both shut large parts of the country and put the entire population on the move at once.
It is not the same everywhere
Seoul and the north are markedly colder in winter than the southern coast around Busan, and Jeju island off the south coast is subtropical — cherry blossom reaches Jeju up to two weeks before it reaches the capital.
Getting around
The KTX crosses the country in under three hours and makes almost everywhere a day trip from Seoul; Jeju needs a flight, and the domestic route to it is one of the busiest in the world.
