Bucharest peaks in autumn, but the mountains, Transylvania and the Black Sea coast each keep a different calendar.

When to visit Romania

Across Romania as a whole, January is typically the calmest month and October the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.

Romania is a country where several seasons run at the same time. The crowd figures on this page come from Bucharest, the only Romanian destination we cover, so the series is the capital’s: it moves from 43 in January to 71 in October. That curve describes a city and not the country. Transylvania, the Carpathians and the Black Sea coast each have a calendar of their own.

Transylvania, with Brașov, Bran and Sibiu among its best-known stops, is a destination for old towns and walking, whose busy periods follow school holidays, long weekends and, in the Carpathian ski resorts, snow. The Black Sea coast is a summer destination: the beach resorts work to a short season, and many hotels and restaurants close once the warm months are over. Bucharest works all year, and its busiest months are not the beach months.

National holidays are the other thing that moves a Romanian trip. The legal holidays include 1 and 2 January, 6 and 7 January, 24 January, 1 May, 1 June, 15 August, 30 November, 1 December and 25 and 26 December, plus the Orthodox Good Friday, Easter and Pentecost, which move each year and often fall on different dates from the Western calendar. Most offices close on those days, and domestic travel towards the mountains and the coast picks up.

It is not the same everywhere

Bucharest lies on the southern plain, with hot summers and cold winters: July and August highs reach 31 °C and January lows fall to -5 °C. The Carpathians are cooler in every season and hold snow for much of the winter, which is why ski resorts and mountain roads depend on the cold months; Transylvania, enclosed by the mountains, tends to have colder winters than the capital; and the Black Sea coast is cooled by the sea in summer and is windy and quiet out of season. Plan the weather by region, not by the capital’s figures.

Getting around

Bucharest is the hub, and the main roads and railways fan out from it to Brașov and Sibiu, to the Black Sea coast at Constanța and to the Danube. The distances are not huge, but mountain roads and trains are slower than the map suggests, so allow half a day for each move between regions. The train is useful between the capital and towns such as Sinaia, Brașov and Sibiu; the coast and the villages of Transylvania are easier with a car. Check mountain road openings before a winter or spring drive, because high passes can stay closed for months.

Country-level tips

  • Check the Orthodox calendar: Easter and Pentecost move each year, in some years Easter falls in early May rather than April, and offices close on Good Friday and on the Monday after Easter.
  • The 30 November and 1 December holidays (St Andrew’s Day and National Day) can form a long weekend; when they do, book trains and mountain rooms early.
  • Pair regions with seasons: the capital and the cities in spring and autumn, the coast in summer, the mountains for walking in summer and early autumn and for snow in winter.
  • In odd-numbered years the George Enescu International Festival fills the capital from late August to late September (27 August to 26 September in 2027), so hotel rooms and concert tickets go early.
