When to visit Portugal
Across Portugal as a whole, January is typically the calmest month and July the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.
Portugal is compact enough to cross in a day and varied enough that the same week can mean two different holidays. The Algarve is a beach destination with a European summer peak; the north is an Atlantic, green, food-and-wine region whose best months are different; and Lisbon and Porto now run near-capacity from March to October thanks to cheap flights and a long cruise season.
Domestic demand behaves like Spain’s but on a smaller scale. Portuguese families take August, and they take it at the coast, so the Algarve and the beaches around Setúbal and Nazaré are at their fullest and most expensive in that month while the interior of the Alentejo bakes quietly at 40°C with almost nobody in it. Easter and the June popular saints add short national spikes on top.
The best windows are April to early June and mid-September to October. Sea temperature is the deciding factor for a beach trip: the Atlantic here is cold, and it only becomes comfortable from July, staying warmest into early October. For cities, food and wine, the shoulders win outright — and November to February is genuinely low season on the mainland while Madeira quietly stays at 19°C.
It is not the same everywhere
The country divides on a roughly horizontal line: the Minho and Douro in the north are green, hilly and among the wettest parts of southern Europe with well over 1,200 mm of rain a year, while the Algarve gets close to 3,000 hours of sun and a Mediterranean summer, and the inland Alentejo is hotter than either, regularly passing 40°C in July and August — Madeira and the Azores sit far out in the Atlantic and stay mild and humid all year.
Getting around
The Alfa Pendular links Porto and Lisbon in about 2h50 and continues to Faro in roughly three hours more, which covers the coastal spine without a car, but the Douro valley, the Alentejo and the Algarve’s western beaches really want you to drive.

- August is the month to avoid on the coast and the month to exploit in the cities: Lisbon and Porto lose a good share of their local life while every stretch of the Algarve is full.
- Portugal has a dense national holiday calendar — 25 April, 1 May, 10 June, 15 August, 5 October, 1 November, 1 December and 8 December — and several of them generate bridge weekends that fill domestic hotels.
- Tolls on the A22 in the Algarve and other former SCUT motorways are electronic only, with no booths; arrange a transponder or a prepaid device with the rental company or you will collect fines by post.
- The Atlantic is cold year-round — around 16°C in spring and only reaching 19–21°C in late summer, and colder still on the west coast than on the south — so beach season is much shorter than the sunshine hours suggest.
