When to visit Morocco
Across Morocco as a whole, July is typically the calmest month and April the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.
Morocco packs three climates into a short drive. The Atlantic coast is mild and breezy year-round; the interior cities of Marrakech and Fez are baking in summer and cool at night in winter; and beyond the Atlas the desert swings from freezing nights to 45°C days.
Spring and autumn are when all three work at once. March to May and September to November are the country’s real seasons — warm enough for the coast, bearable in the medinas, comfortable in the dunes.
July and August are difficult inland, though the Atlantic coast at Essaouira stays cool and is where Moroccans themselves go.
It is not the same everywhere
Essaouira can be 22°C and windy while Marrakech, three hours inland, is at 40°C; the High Atlas holds snow into May and the Sahara is unbearable by day in midsummer and near-freezing at night in January.
Getting around
A comfortable rail line links Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech, with the Al Boraq high-speed section in the north; anything into the Atlas or the desert means a car, a driver or a tour.
