When to visit Mexico
Across Mexico as a whole, September is typically the calmest month and December the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.
Mexico’s climate is governed by height above sea level far more than by how far south you are. Mexico City sits at 2,240 metres and is mild all year with cool nights; the Caribbean and Pacific coasts at sea level are hot and humid whatever the month.
The tourist calendar splits accordingly. The Caribbean runs a dry high season from December to April, with spring break in March and a genuine hurricane risk from August to October. The highlands are pleasant year-round, with a distinct rainy season from June to September that mostly means an afternoon downpour rather than a washed-out day.
Domestic travel adds two more surges: Semana Santa, which empties the cities and fills every beach, and the December holidays.
It is not the same everywhere
The central highlands are spring-like all year and can be chilly after dark, the Yucatán is hot and humid with a hurricane season, and the Pacific north is desert — Mexico City in January needs a jacket while Cancún is at 28°C.
Getting around
Distances are continental and domestic flights are the norm; the ADO bus network is genuinely comfortable for the Yucatán, but Mexico City to Cancún is a flight, not a drive.
