When to visit Japan
Across Japan as a whole, February is typically the calmest month and April the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.
Japan concentrates its domestic travel into three short, immovable blocks: New Year from roughly 29 December to 3 January, Golden Week from 29 April to 5 May, and Obon in mid-August. In those weeks the entire country moves at once — shinkansen reserved seats vanish, hotel rates double, and popular sites are busier than at any point in the foreign tourist calendar. Everything else about when to visit Japan is negotiable; those three are not.
The two famous seasons, cherry blossom and autumn colour, are peaks in their own right and are also the two most beautiful times to be there. Sakura moves north from Kyushu in late March to Tokyo and Kyoto in early April and does not reach Hokkaido until May; the autumn leaves run the other way, arriving in Hokkaido in late September and reaching Kyoto in the second half of November. Both are short, both are forecast obsessively, and both fill accommodation months ahead.
The rest of the year rewards flexibility. June and early July bring the tsuyu rainy season to most of the country, which makes them cheap and often overlooked; late summer is hot, humid and typhoon-prone; and January to early March is genuinely quiet on the main tourist route while Hokkaido and the Japan Alps have one of the best snow seasons anywhere. May and October are the two months when weather and comfort align best without a national holiday attached.
It is not the same everywhere
Japan stretches nearly 3,000 km, so in February Hokkaido is buried under some of the heaviest snowfall on the planet while Okinawa sits at a subtropical 20°C — and even within Honshu the divide is sharp, with the Sea of Japan side around Kanazawa and Niigata taking metres of winter snow while the Pacific side stays dry and sunny; the tsuyu rainy season reaches Okinawa in May and the main islands in June but largely skips Hokkaido altogether.
Getting around
The shinkansen makes the country feel small — Tokyo to Kyoto in 2h15 and Osaka in about 2h30 — so most trips need no car at all, while Hokkaido and Okinawa are better reached by a domestic flight than by rail.

Country-level tips
- Golden Week (29 April to 5 May), Obon (around 13 to 16 August) and the New Year period (29 December to 3 January) are the three weeks to plan around: reserved shinkansen seats sell out, domestic flights spike, and many small businesses close over New Year.
- Reserve shinkansen seats rather than relying on the unreserved cars during any holiday period; reservations open one month ahead to the day, and the Fuji-side seats go first.
- The nationwide Japan Rail Pass now costs enough that it only pays off on long, fast itineraries — for a Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka trip, individual tickets plus a Suica or ICOCA card usually work out cheaper.
- Cash still matters outside the big cities, and foreign cards work most reliably in convenience-store ATMs and at post office machines rather than at bank branches.
