The baths make winter work here in a way it does not elsewhere.

When to visit Hungary

Across Hungary as a whole, January is typically the calmest month and August the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.

Hungary has a strong continental climate — hot summers, cold winters — but Budapest’s thermal baths give the cold months a purpose that most European capitals lack. Sitting outdoors in 38°C water while the air is below freezing is a genuine reason to come in January.

The summer peak is real but concentrated: July and August bring the heat, the festival season and Lake Balaton’s domestic crowds. August in particular sees Sziget and the 20 August national day back to back.

Spring and early autumn are the value windows, with warm days, working kitchens and none of the summer pressure on accommodation.

It is not the same everywhere

The Great Plain in the east is the hottest and driest part of the country, Lake Balaton draws the entire domestic summer crowd, and the hills north of Budapest are several degrees cooler and noticeably wetter.

Getting around

Budapest is the hub for everything; trains to Lake Balaton, Eger and Pécs take one to three hours, and intercity buses fill the gaps where the rail network is slow.
