Denmark is a country of daylight extremes rather than temperature extremes. The Gulf Stream keeps winters mild for the latitude, hovering a degree or two either side of freezing, but the sun sets before four in December and barely sets at all in late June, and that swing drives the entire visitor season. Roughly two thirds of Danish tourism happens between May and September.
The domestic pattern is unusually concentrated. Danish industrial holidays and school summer breaks fall in weeks 27 to 31, which is July, and in those weeks the country physically relocates: families move to summerhouses on the Jutland North Sea coast and the Baltic islands, provincial restaurants close because the owners are also on holiday, and Copenhagen loses a slice of its own population while gaining foreign visitors. August is a better month to see the country working normally.
Beyond the summer window Denmark rewards the traveller who arrives with a coat. Attractions on the coast — Legoland, the amusement parks, the fjord ferries, most of the seaside museums — run an April-to-October calendar, so a winter visit is essentially an urban one. That is not a bad trade: the design museums, the food and the long-lit interiors are the point of Danish winter, and the whole country is at its cheapest.
It is not the same everywhere
The Jutland peninsula is the windy, sandy, thinly populated half of Denmark and gets both the wildest North Sea weather and the summerhouse crowds, while the eastern islands around Copenhagen sit noticeably drier and a degree or so warmer in summer, and Bornholm out in the Baltic records the most sunshine hours of anywhere in the kingdom.
Getting around
The country is compact but broken into islands, so distances feel longer than the map: Copenhagen to Aarhus is about three hours by train or forty-five minutes by air, the Great Belt Bridge carries a hefty toll, and Bornholm needs a ferry or a flight.
