When to visit Czechia
Across Czechia as a whole, February is typically the calmest month and July the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.
Czech tourism is extraordinarily concentrated. Prague takes the overwhelming majority of international visitors, with Český Krumlov and the spa towns picking up day trips. Step outside those and the crowd disappears almost entirely, even in August.
The capital peaks twice: through the warm months from May to September, and again for the Christmas markets in December. The gap between them — late October and November — is the cheapest and emptiest stretch of the year.
Winter is cold but genuinely atmospheric, and the deep-winter weeks after New Year are when the Old Town is walkable at a normal pace for the only time.
It is not the same everywhere
Bohemia in the west is milder and wetter; Moravia in the east is warmer in summer and colder in winter, and the Krkonoše mountains along the Polish border hold snow well into spring while Prague is already thawing.
Getting around
Trains and long-distance buses are cheap and comfortable, and nowhere is more than about four hours from Prague; a car helps only for castles and the smaller spa towns.
