Stay the night: Bruges empties after the last coach leaves, whatever the season.

When to visit Bruges

Bruges is calmest in January and busiest in August. For the best balance of decent weather and smaller crowds, aim for February.

Bruges has one of the most extreme day-tripper profiles in Europe. Coaches from Brussels and Paris, trains from Ghent and Brussels and cruise passengers from Zeebrugge all arrive in the same four or five hours, and the historic centre is small enough that you feel every one of them. Between about 10:00 and 17:00 in summer the Markt, the Rozenhoedkaai and the canal-boat jetties are genuinely crowded; early in the morning and in the evening the same streets are almost silent.

The season runs from Easter to October, peaking in July and August. May and June are the most pleasant compromise, with long evenings that belong to overnight guests. The cruise season at Zeebrugge adds noticeable waves on ship days from spring to autumn.

Winter is the quiet time, cold and often wet, but it is when Bruges feels most like itself. December is busier, with Christmas markets on the Markt and Simon Stevinplein pulling weekend visitors from three countries.

Cruise days change everything

Bruges is a cruise port. On ship days the centre fills between mid-morning and late afternoon, then empties again.

How long to stay

One night and two half-days is the minimum to see Bruges without the crowd; two nights let you add Ghent or the coast.

Local timing tips

  • Climb the Belfry at opening or in the last hour; the stairway is narrow and entry is limited, so the queue in between can be long.
  • Canal boats run from several jetties; the ones furthest from the Markt usually have the shortest wait.
  • Monday closures are common at the city museums, so check before you plan a Monday day trip.
  • The Musea Brugge card covers the city museums and pays off if you visit three or more.
