Carnival aside, the southern winter is the country’s most comfortable season.

When to visit Brazil

Across Brazil as a whole, June is typically the calmest month and February the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.

Brazil is southern hemisphere and vast enough to hold several climates. The south-east, including Rio and São Paulo, has a hot humid summer from December to March and a mild dry winter from June to August. The north-east is hot all year with its rains around April to July, and the Amazon has high and low water rather than hot and cold.

Carnival is the immovable fixture. It falls in February or early March and reprices the entire country — flights, hotels and buses — for a week either side.

For most visitors the surprise is that the southern winter is the better trip: Rio in July is dry, in the mid-twenties, and far less crowded than in January.

It is not the same everywhere

Rio in July is a pleasant 25°C while the far south around Porto Alegre can be near freezing and the north-east stays at 30°C; the Amazon runs on flood season rather than temperature, with high water roughly December to May.

Getting around

The country is continental and domestic flights are essential — Rio to Salvador is two and a half hours in the air and over twenty by road; long-distance buses are comfortable but only sensible for shorter hops.

Country-level tips

  • Carnival dates move each year and sell out months ahead; check before fixing anything.
  • Rio beaches are busiest on weekends year-round, regardless of season.
  • The north-east and the south-east have opposite rainy seasons — do not plan both by one forecast.
  • Domestic flights are much cheaper booked in advance and outside the January and July school holidays.
