When to visit Australia
Across Australia as a whole, August is typically the calmest month and January the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.
Australia is southern hemisphere, so Christmas is high summer and July is winter. But the continent splits: the southern cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide are best from October to April, while the tropical north — Cairns, Darwin, the Kimberley — has a wet season from November to April and is at its best in the southern winter.
The result is that there is always somewhere in Australia in season, but rarely everywhere at once. The shoulder months of March to May and September to November come closest.
The domestic calendar matters too. The summer holidays from mid-December to late January put the whole country on the road at once and fill every coastal town.

In July Sydney is around 17°C and sunny, Melbourne is cold and wet, and Darwin is 31°C and perfectly dry; in January that reverses entirely, with the north under monsoon and the south in heatwave.

Distances are intercontinental — Sydney to Perth is five hours in the air, further than London to Moscow; domestic flights are unavoidable, and road trips need serious time.
