When to visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial
The calmest time to visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial is February, when the crowd typically sits around 32/100. The busiest stretch is July. Hour to hour, the first hour after opening is usually the quietest; check the opening time on the official site.
Auschwitz-Birkenau is a memorial and a museum, and it is visited with a pass or a guide, not by walking in. The memorial says entry to Auschwitz I and Birkenau is only with a personal entry pass, that passes are booked online and that none are sold at the entrance. In the model, the grounds are calmest in the first hour after opening and fullest in the early afternoon.
The yearly curve follows Kraków’s: February is the calmest month and July and August the busiest. The memorial’s hours follow the seasons too: visits can start from 07:30 in every month, and the last start runs from 14:00 in December to 19:00 from June to August, so a winter visit has to be planned earlier in the day.

How to visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial with fewer people
- Book your entry pass online in advance: the memorial does not sell passes at the entrance, and entry to both Auschwitz I and Birkenau is only with a personal pass.
- Arrive at least 30 minutes before the start time for the security check, and keep your bag within 35 × 25 × 15 cm; larger luggage stays in the vehicle or on the bus.
- Groups must hire one of the memorial’s guides; individual visitors may visit with or without one. The memorial also asks visitors to dress in a way that befits the site.
