Argentina

Americas Medium confidence Updated 2026-07-01

The country is so long that Patagonia and the north are never in season together.

When to visit Argentina

Across Argentina as a whole, June is typically the calmest month and November the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.

Argentina stretches from the subtropics to the edge of Antarctica, so it has no single season. Buenos Aires is at its most pleasant in spring and autumn — October to November and March to April — with hot humid summers and mild damp winters.

Patagonia, by contrast, is only really open from November to March; outside that window daylight is short, winds are fierce and many routes and refuges close. The north-west around Salta is the opposite again, best in the dry winter months.

January is the month to understand. Porteños leave the capital for the coast, so Buenos Aires is hot, quiet and half-shut while Mar del Plata is heaving.

It is not the same everywhere

A January day can be 30°C in Buenos Aires, 35°C in Salta and 12°C with gales in El Calafate; Patagonia and the north-west are effectively separate countries for planning purposes.

Getting around

Distances are enormous and domestic flights through Buenos Aires are usually unavoidable — the capital to Ushuaia is nearly four hours in the air; long-distance coaches are excellent but measured in days.

Country-level tips

  • Patagonia is seasonal: many services close entirely from April to October.
  • Buenos Aires theatres and many restaurants close in January when the city empties.
  • Book Patagonian flights and El Chaltén accommodation months ahead for the December–February window.
  • Bring layers for Patagonia in any month; the wind matters more than the temperature.
