When to visit the Statue of Liberty

The calmest time to visit the Statue of Liberty is January, when the crowd typically sits around 40/100. The busiest stretch is July. Hour to hour, the first hour after opening is usually the quietest; check the opening time on the official site.

The only way onto Liberty Island is the official ferry, and every passenger passes airport-style security before boarding. That line, not the island, is where the day is won or lost: on the first ferry it moves quickly, and by late morning in summer it can take over an hour. Pedestal and crown access are sold separately and in small numbers.

Summer and the weeks around Christmas and New Year are the peaks. January and February are the quietest months, cold and windy on the water but with the shortest lines of the year. Spring and autumn weekdays are a good compromise.

How to visit the Statue of Liberty with fewer people

  • Book tickets only through the official ferry operator or an authorised reseller; street sellers near Battery Park are not official.
  • Crown tickets are limited and sell out months ahead; the pedestal is easier and has most of the view.
  • Plan for Ellis Island on the same ticket: the ferry stops there on the way back to Manhattan.
