When to visit the Reina Sofía Museum
The calmest time to visit the Reina Sofía Museum is January, when the crowd typically sits around 42/100. The busiest stretch is May. Hour to hour, the first hour after opening is usually the quietest; check the opening time on the official site.
The main site, with the Sabatini and Nouvel buildings, is open Monday and Wednesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 21:00 and on Sunday from 10:00 to 14:30. It is closed on Tuesdays and on 1 and 6 January, 1 May, 15 May, 9 November, and 24, 25 and 31 December (the 15 May and 9 November dates may change with the regional business calendar). Free admission runs from 19:00 on weekdays and from 12:30 on Sundays, for individual visitors only, and still needs a ticket.
The curve follows Madrid's: May and September are the busiest months and January is the calmest. The official page says the busiest times of day are usually between 10:00 and 12:00 and when free access begins at 19:00, and that between 14:00 and 18:00 a visit is quieter. On Sundays the museum closes at 14:30, so that quieter stretch exists on the other days. The hour chart below is the site’s model, not a count from the museum, so read the two together.

How to visit the Reina Sofía Museum with fewer people
- Choose your visiting time when you buy the ticket: between 10:00 and the start of free access, every ticket is assigned a specific time slot, and the official page asks you to keep to it.
- Only handbags up to 40 x 30 x 10 cm worn at the front, and small folding umbrellas, are allowed in; suitcases and large backpacks are not admitted and cannot be left in the lockers.
- Galleries must be vacated 15 minutes before the museum closes, so late arrivals on Sundays have little time.
