The Cape and the safari country have opposite rainy seasons — and opposite best months.

When to visit South Africa

Across South Africa as a whole, June is typically the calmest month and January the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.

South Africa is southern hemisphere, so December to February is high summer and June to August is winter. But the country splits in two in a way that catches people out: the Western Cape has a Mediterranean climate with winter rainfall, while the rest of the country, including the safari regions, has summer rainfall and dry winters.

That gives two opposite answers. For Cape Town and the Garden Route, come between November and March. For Kruger and the bushveld, the dry winter months of June to September are when the vegetation thins and animals gather at water.

The domestic December holidays are the single biggest surge, when South Africans take their long summer break and the coast fills.

It is not the same everywhere

Cape Town is wet and windy in July while Kruger is dry, mild and at its best for game viewing; in January that reverses, with the Cape at its driest and the lowveld hot and thundery.

Getting around

Distances are large and domestic flights between Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban take about two hours; the Garden Route and the Winelands need a car, and self-driving is straightforward on the main routes.
