When to visit Netherlands

The Netherlands has an unusual double peak. The expected one is July and August; the unexpected one is the second half of April, when the bulb fields flower and Keukenhof draws visitors from across the world. King’s Day on 27 April tops it off and turns the whole country into a street party.
Because the bloom is short and weather-dependent, that April surge is intense and brief. A week later the fields are cut and the country returns to a normal spring.
Outside those windows the Netherlands is one of the easier European countries to travel in off-peak: compact, flat, comprehensively connected, and comfortable in shoulder weather.
It is not the same everywhere
The country is small enough that weather is near-uniform, but exposure is not — the North Sea coast is markedly windier and cooler than the sheltered south-east, and the Randstad cities are far busier than Friesland or Limburg in any month.
Getting around
Nowhere is more than about two and a half hours by train, and an OV-chipkaart plus a rented bike covers almost everything; intercity trains run every fifteen minutes on the main corridors.
