When to visit France
Across France as a whole, February is typically the calmest month and July the busiest. Crowds are not uniform, though — see how the regions differ below.
France runs on a school calendar more rigid than almost anywhere in Europe. The country splits into three holiday zones whose dates rotate, so half-terms roll through in waves rather than all at once, but the summer grande vacance is universal: from mid-July to the end of August the cities thin out and the coasts and mountains fill.
That produces an unusual pattern. Paris in August is calmer than Paris in June, because Parisians have left and many restaurants close, while the Côte d’Azur and the Atlantic coast are at capacity. If you want cities, come when the French are working. If you want countryside, avoid the fortnight either side of 15 August.
The shoulder months are genuinely good across the whole country. May and September give you long days, open kitchens and manageable queues almost everywhere except the Riviera.
It is not the same everywhere
The north is grey and Atlantic, Alsace is continental with real winters, and the Mediterranean south is a different climate entirely — Nice can be 10°C warmer than Lille on the same February day, and the mistral makes Provence feel colder than the thermometer suggests.
Getting around
The TGV network makes distances deceptive: Paris to Lyon is two hours, Marseille three, and Bordeaux just over two — but book weeks ahead, because French rail prices climb steeply as trains fill.

- Museum tickets are cheaper and queues shorter on weekday afternoons; several national museums close on Tuesdays.

- Sunday is genuinely quiet outside Paris: expect closed shops and reduced rural transport.
